Plovdiv
The saying "you have to visit Plovdiv to really understand Bulgaria" is absolutely true, and there's so much to discover in this country's second-largest city. Plovdiv, which is 160 meters above sea level, is about a 2-hour drive from Sofia. It's located in the western part of the fertile Thracian Valley and is one of Europe's oldest cities, existing around the same time as Troya and Mycenae.
